Monroe Environmental Supports Local High School Events: Career Fair and Welding Competition

Dated May 2, 2024

Monroe, MI – Monroe Environmental sponsored two events this past week in support of skilled trades education and career opportunities for local high school students.

The first, the High School Career Expo on Tuesday, April 23 was sponsored by the Monroe County Business Alliance and held at the First Merchants Bank Expo Center on the Monroe County Fairgrounds. This was an opportunity for students to explore career options in Monroe County. Director of Sales Adam Pace and HR Manager Mike Knabusch were on hand to discuss career opportunities in the pollution control industry, including engineering, fabrication (welders (steel and plastic) and machine assemblers), sales, project management, and procurement.

Monroe Environmental provided working display models of our products to explain the engineering and fabrication of our systems. Students were also able to try their hand at welding polypropylene, PVC, and other plastics at Monroe’s hands-on plastics welding station manned by expert Plastic Welder Doug Stamper.

On Friday, April 26, area high school seniors were selected from their respective welding programs to compete in the Monroe County Community College (MCCC) Annual High School Welding Competition. The competition was held in the Career Technology Center on the MCCC campus. Monroe Environmental is proud to have been a sponsor for the event.

Four students, one per category (GMAW, GTAW, SMAW, and Combined welding), from each area high school were selected to compete, with prizes and scholarships awarded in each category. Monroe provided welding caps and T-shirts for the event. Monroe Environmental Shop Manager Art Diaz served as a judge for the competition.

Monroe Environmental Welder Blake Cabrera, an alum of Monroe High School’s welding program and past competitor in this competition, made a special presentation about being a welder/fabricator and the type of career it affords the students.

“We are always looking for skilled welders and this was an excellent opportunity to meet with students considering an education in the advanced welding program at MCCC”, said HR Manager Mike Knabusch. “Many of our welders are graduates of this program.”
